Guy de Maupassant was and remains one of the most widely read and beloved French authors. Many generations of readers discovered the world of forbidden erotica through his works. "My dear friend", where the story of the career of a mediocre seducer and a pro-lifer Georges Duroy, developing in the spirit of an adventurous novel, became a symbolic reflection of the spiritual impoverishment of the hero and society. The enduring relevance of the novel is best evidenced by the interest of cinematography: there are at least half a dozen of its screen adaptations. The novel "Life", which Leo Tolstoy evaluated as "hardly the best French novel since Hugo's "Les Misérables", tells of lost illusions. An example of unsurpassed psychology and literary skill are numerous short stories by Maupassant, starting with the famous "Puffin". The writer's work is characterized by strict internal artistic logic, concision, precision and clarity of "authentic French language" (A. France).
