The memoirs of Prince and then Duke Eugene of Württemberg (1787-1857) cover the turbulent era of the late XVIII - the first quarter of the XIX century. "One of the best Russian generals of the time" (Dominique Lieven), Eugene was immensely popular with the troops. The second volume of his memoirs covers the period from the Battle of Smolensk in August 1812 to the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829. As a division and then corps commander, Eugene was at the center of all the decisive battles of the War of 1812-1814. At the head of his regiments he was the first to enter the defeated Paris. In December 1825, chance brought Eugene to St. Petersburg, where he participated on the side of Nicholas I in the events on Senate Square, in 1828 he fought with the Turks at the siege of Varna. With the exception of translations of fragments in pre-revolutionary historical journals, Eugene's memoirs were hardly the only memoirs of commanders of the Russian army of the Napoleonic period that remained inaccessible to Russian-speaking readers. The publication of this complete translation introduces a valuable historical source on the history of the Napoleonic era.
