"I cannot see a clean pen without immediately wanting to dip it in ink," Catherine II frankly admitted in her memoirs, which were banned in Tsarist Russia (even Nicholas I first read them, receiving a copy he had kept after Pushkin's death). It was only in 1865 that Herzen published the empress's memoirs in London, and they only became fully available to Russian readers in the early 20th century. An incredible archive left by Catherine the Great, comprising dozens of volumes, has survived to this day, containing her notes and letters, as well as journalism, plays, and historical and philosophical works.
This edition includes a late edition of the "Memoirs" (covering the period from 1744 to 1758), as well as the empress's "Selected Letters."
