The epic tale of the Medici family, which left an indelible mark on the history of Renaissance Europe. The illustrious descendants of an ambitious banking dynasty—two great Italian queens of France—determine the fate of the state during the most dramatic periods of its history.

Book 3. The Furious Catherine. France, 1536. The position of Catherine de Medici, the childless wife of the heir to the throne, Henry, becomes precarious after the assassination of his brother, the Dauphin Francis of Valois. Only Francis I, the reigning King of France, believes in her innocence. Convinced that she can only become a mother with the help of Nostradamus—an astrologer and seer feared by the people and nobles—Catherine sends army captain Raymond de Polignac to search for him. Amid court intrigues, betrayals, humiliations, and persecution, Catherine patiently awaits the moment when she can give birth to her first child.

After the death of Francis I, Catherine, now queen, unhesitatingly enters into dangerous alliances, encouraged by the prophecies of Nostradamus, and provokes conflicts between Catholics and Huguenots. These conflicts are destined to culminate in the tragic St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, when the streets of the capital will be stained with the blood of Protestants, and Catherine, who became regent of France after the death of Henry II, will lose everything she ever loved...

Book 4. The Last Chapter. Paris, 1601. The capital of 17th-century France is a hotbed of vice and violence. Marie de' Medici, married to Henry IV of Bourbon, faces the machinations of his mistress. Meanwhile, a sinister conspiracy is brewing among nobles intent on overthrowing Henry. Sensing that the situation is becoming critical, Marie decides to rely on Mathieu Laforge, a spy and assassin, and achieves temporary success.

When Henry IV is finally killed by conspirators, Marie becomes regent for her son Louis. Her reign proves extremely difficult: the people and nobles barely tolerate the Queen Mother—after all, she is a foreigner and a relative of the Black Queen, Catherine! Seeking to extricate herself from the maze of conspiracies, Marie allies with the formidable Richelieu. But the cardinal, thirsting for unlimited power, readily betrays the Queen Mother. The days of her glory and power come to an end. Only her friendship with the master Rubens brightens Marie's old age and the decline of the Medici dynasty.

Matteo Strucula's prose—fast-paced and electric—has achieved enduring success not only in Italy but throughout the world.
