The present work represents a voluminous and unique historical research in the part of the history of the most prestigious and chivalrous weapons of medieval Russia - Romanesque swords of all-European types. A. N. Kirpichnikov, a great researcher of Old Russian military science, initiated such studies more than half a century ago, specializing mainly on swords of the early Middle Ages from the burial inventory of pagan druzhinny barrows. At the same time, the study of weapons of the High and Late Middle Ages (XIII-XVI centuries) due to extremely rare, scattered and accidental finds was of a review nature, which gave reason even to venerable historians to accept the erroneous version about the borrowing by Russian warriors of eastern armament with a massive transition to sabers immediately after the Mongol invasion. The research, archaeological, pictorial material presented in the first volume of this work, the analysis of the ratio of swords and sabers, the detailed catalog of finds convincingly show that the Russian heavy-armed mounted fighter represented a full analog to the Western European knight and, having similar armament, used the same heavy pan-European tactics of battle. The second volume will present sword finds localized or associated with Russian lands during the era described. The work is illustrated with the richest and most colorful illustrative material, both historical and made by the author himself, which makes it possible for both specialists and a wide range of readers to get acquainted with the results of the research in detail.
