Lev Losev (Lev Vladimirovich Lifshitz, 1937–2009) was a poet, literary scholar, essayist, and friend and interlocutor of Joseph Brodsky. Born to children's poets Vladimir Lifshitz and Asya Genkina, Losev studied at the Faculty of Philology at Leningrad State University and was a member of the "Philological School" association.

Memoirs are another important part of Losev's legacy, in addition to his poetry and literary studies. Losev writes about his youth, his acquaintance with Brodsky, the impression the future Nobel laureate made on him at their first meeting, the scandalous antics of the "Philological School," post-war Leningrad, emigration, and much more. Losev speaks of the people and places dear to him with feeling, yet somehow remaining somewhat in the shadows, maintaining a respectful distance. This intonation is a true testimony of love and respect for his subjects.

"Meander" is a true treat for anyone who appreciates 20th-century memoirs, is interested in the history of literary emigration, and the uncensored culture of post-war Leningrad.
