The captivating image of Princess Maria Nikolaevna Volkonskaya (née Raevskaya; 1805-1863) - the legendary "Russian woman", daughter of a hero of the Napoleonic Wars and wife of the Decembrist, who followed her convicted husband to Siberia - is depicted in Russian and foreign poetry, prose and memoirs, in painting, drama and cinema, in the works of historians, publicists and literary critics.
Readers are offered the first in Russian historiography detailed biography of M. N. Volkonskaya. According to the author of the book, M. D. Filin, the main event of her turbulent, full of dramatic and mysterious pages of life was an acquaintance with Pushkin, which developed into a mutual "hidden love" - love for all the years they have let go. Traces of this feeling, which only grew stronger during the separation, can be found both in the Princess's documents and in many of the poet's works.
