Manga is a type of comics that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. Initially, the term "manga" was used in relation to caricatures and comic sketches in Japanese newspapers, but soon came to mean comics in Japanese.

This book is the first study in Russian Japanese studies of the mechanisms of socio-cultural transfer of verbal and graphic images from Western literature, painting, sculpture, animation and cinema to such an Eastern type of comics as manga.

Using the example of classical and modern works ("The Divine Comedy", "Crime and Punishment", "Death in Venice", etc.), it is demonstrated how Japanese manga authors, using techniques of quotation, stylization or parody (irony), play with borrowed images of European artistic culture in different ways and subordinate them to their creative needs.

The author analyzes comics by Tezuka Osamu (Mighty Atom, Princess Knight), Mizuki Shigeru (Kitaro's Night Tales), Ikeda Riyoko (The Rose of Versailles), Hagio Moto (Thomas's Heart), Takemiya Keiko (Reach for Terra), Nagai Go (Devilman), Oda Eiichiro (One Piece), Noda Satoru (Golden Kamuy), Maruo Suehiro, and others. Also, for the first time in Russian, a translation of the chapter of Mizuki Shigeru's manga "Sampei the Waterman" is presented.

A beautifully illustrated edition will be a wonderful gift for fans of manga, comics, fans of Japanese and European art, as well as Japanologists, cultural experts, art historians, and anyone interested in cross-cultural studies.
