Elwood Curtis, a sixteen-year-old African-American teenager, is a good student, working part-time at a convenience store after school, preparing for college: he dreams of becoming a teacher. But due to a ridiculous accident, he is accused of a crime he didn't commit and sentenced to time in a correctional facility. Nickel Academy turns out to be a real hell, where the students are physically and emotionally abused and exploited. Those who resist are taken "to the margins", from where they never return. Elwood is helped to survive in this hell by his friendship with Turner, who is his complete opposite. Elwood is naive and believes in the possibility of justice, and Turner is convinced that the world was, is and will be cruel and unfair, and so will always be. Desperate attempt of friends to change the order reigning in the "Nickel", ends in tragedy. The novel is based on the story of a real correctional school in Florida, for more than a hundred years of existence crippled the lives of thousands of teenagers.
