The diaries of Yevgeny Shvarts have long since taken their place in the vast and diverse stratum of literature. It would seem that for him, a playwright and storyteller, describing the non-fictional would be a departure from the nature of his gift. But it turned out otherwise - in his gift, new colors shone through. In the 1950s, a different kind of narrative began to form in parallel in E. Shvarts' notes: memories. The past in his diaries was intertwined with the present: "In them you feel the living human being of the author, as he was on the day he wrote. The diaries became a real creative laboratory for E. Shvarts. It was as if he were writing sketches from life, creating sketches for portraits with the indispensable condition not to correct himself, to preserve the immediacy of his first impressions and the sharpness of his emotional response. We are not given to penetrate into the innermost depths of the writer's personality, but his notes give us the opportunity to touch it. Letters also help us to do this. The ones published in this book are addressed to people creatively connected with Shvarts: director Nikolai Akimov, poets Samuil Marshak and Kornei Chukovsky, film director Grigory Kozintsev and many others.
