Thomas Hobbes was an English materialist philosopher who challenged medieval scholasticism by questioning the divine origin of man. For his views, he was repeatedly persecuted by the clergy. After publishing his treatise "Leviathan," which argued for the primacy of the state over the church and likened it to a biblical monster serving as the earthly embodiment of God's omnipotence, the philosopher was declared an "atheist" and forced into hiding in France.

This edition also includes the treatise "On the Body," an expanded exposition of the thinker's views on the essential nature of man, as well as "Human Nature," in which Hobbes sets out to derive practical rules for human behavior from general principles of human nature.
