In February 1934, the steamship Chelyuskin, sent to conquer the Northern Sea Route, was crushed by ice. The crew and passengers, including women and children, did not panic. They managed to unload all their necessities onto the ice, set up a tent camp, and lived there for over two months, maintaining their composure and faith in rescue. Scientists observed the Arctic and gave lectures on various topics. Special teams regularly cleared landing sites for aircraft. Illiterate people (and there were some) were taught to read and write. They published a wall newspaper, "We Will Not Surrender." The true heroes of the Chelyuskin epic were the Soviet polar pilots. For the first time in the history of world aviation, in harsh weather conditions, with fierce winds and temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius, they carried out numerous search flights, discovered an ice camp, and evacuated 102 people to the mainland. All this was accomplished in aircraft without enclosed cockpits or navigation instruments. Both the Chelyuskin crew and the pilots operated at the very edge of the impossible, in conditions of complete uncertainty. They managed to find unusual solutions that required incredible physical, mental, and intellectual effort. To this day, the rescue of the Chelyuskin crew is seen as an adventure novel with a twisting plot. The author, artist Vladislav Serov, studied a vast amount of historical material and created a gripping graphic novel about the heroes of this incredible polar epic. Oleg Bundur, author of the articles "Let's Talk About the Chelyuskin" and "How Heroes Rescued Heroes," supplemented the comic's heroic narrative with fascinating details about the expedition and its main participants—the rescued and the rescuers.
