Alexander Blok in a review of the next book about the life and work of M. Y. Lermontov, as if sympathizing with modern and future biographers, lamented: “There is no soil for the study of Lermontov – a beggar biography.” It remains to "see" Lermontov. Nevertheless, there is a “ground” for understanding the poet – these are his poems. It is unlikely that in domestic literature there will be another such writer, whose work - brilliant poems, poems, drama and prose - would so fully and deeply reflect his fate, life circumstances and the formation of personality. The creative heritage of Mikhail Lermontov testifies to him as a person more fully and penetrating than the memories of contemporaries and, undoubtedly, is the best source material for the “providence” that A. Blok dreamed of. The author of the new book about Lermontov, comprehending the fate of the poet, analyzes in detail primarily his works (including imperfect, early works), uses the most vivid and authoritative works of researchers of the past, as well as philosophers and writers of the Silver Age, whose opinions about M. Lermontov are unknown to the general reader, agrees and polemics with them. Lermontov is read deeply and in a new way, which happens in those cases when the poet (Valery Mikhailov is the author of more than twenty books of poetry and prose) writes about the poet.
