Emma Jung (1882-1955), wife of the founder of analytical psychology Carl Gustav Jung, and Maria-Louise von Franz (1915-1998), his longtime collaborator and closest colleague, spent more than 30 years writing this book. It is from a Jungian perspective that the two researchers also dissect the copious material of the Grail legends. Like the profound symbolism of alchemy, these folkloric fantasies and their symbolism depict essential, unconscious psychic processes. The authors of the book focus primarily on the work of the medieval French poet Chretien de Troyes, the pioneer of the courtesan novel and compiler of the oldest known compilation about the Grail. The belief of a magical artifact that grants health and prosperity, hidden in a hard-to-reach land, in the lost castle of a gravely ill King, has aroused unflagging interest among a wide audience for eight centuries. The archetypal motif of the quest for the treasure is intricately linked to the drama of the Son of God's journey to the cross: according to legend, the cherished treasure is the vessel into which Joseph of Arimathea collected the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Thus the Grail story illuminates not only fundamental human problems, but also tragic events that form the background of Christian culture. Thanks to this paradoxical synthesis, the story of the knights thirsting to drink from the miraculous cup is still a living literary phenomenon.
