Who is to blame?

The novel "Who's to Blame" is a first-person coming-of-age story about the protagonist, a boy living with his parents on the outskirts of Rome. The family struggles to make ends meet, leading a secluded life and having no contact with relatives. While something is known about his father's side of the family, his mother's past is shrouded in a thick fog. However, this fog clears when, on Passover, the protagonist finds himself at the home of her wealthy relatives. This meeting becomes a significant milestone in the teenager's life, bringing with it changes: a New York vacation, a painful feeling of love, and then a terrible tragedy and a new life in a bourgeois environment. A prestigious private school, pleasant acquaintances, and great opportunities nevertheless do not relieve the young man from troubling thoughts.
Who is to blame for the misfortunes that have befallen his family? This question will torment the protagonist for many years. Many will be judged by conscience—and above all, himself.
