Eugenia Ginzburg, historian and journalist, mother of the famous writer Vasily Aksenov, was repressed in 1937, spent ten years in prison and Kolyma camps and eight years in exile in Magadan, and in 1955 her case was dismissed for lack of corpus delicti. But even during the thaw, Ginzburg's autobiographical novel The Steep Route, in which she recounted her terrible fate, could not be published in the USSR: it was published only during the Perestroika years, becoming one of the most famous testimonies about the crimes of Stalin's regime - and Ginzburg, who before her arrest was a staunch adherent of communist teachings, does not absolve herself of blame for what happened. The ability to discreetly, but psychologically accurate to convey feelings of "madness and horror", hope and complete despair, truthfully show scenes of cruelty and self-sacrifice, manifestations of cowardice and bravery - all this allows you to call "Steep Route" an outstanding literary work. The main value of the novel is that it teaches to preserve courage and dignity, helps to get rid of the "great Fear", which is capable of destroying the fates and lives of an entire generation.
