The students at River Valley School for the Deaf want to live the normal lives of teenagers, to make friends, fall in love, study and pass exams, and they also want politicians, doctors, and parents to stop explaining what to do with their bodies. The book's characters include a girl, Charlie, who has never interacted with other deaf people before, a boy, Austin, who grew up in a family where deafness is passed down from generation to generation, and the headmistress of February School, the daughter of deaf parents, who is doing everything she can to keep River Valley open. But both in the country and in the lives of each character dramatic events occur, and one must either accept the changes or assert the right to decide for themselves how to live their lives.
