Dmitry Furmanov, a revolutionary, military leader, and writer, is best known to the general public for his novel "Chapayev," which was also boosted by the colossal success of the Vasiliev brothers' film adaptation of the novel. The book "Red Front" chronicles the events of two wars: World War I and the Civil War. The Great War is chronicled in his diary from 1914 to 1916. Its geography in D. Furmanov's life is vast: the Caucasus, Siberia, and Dvinsk. Here he is a nurse with the rank of ensign, traveling with trains and airships of the Zemsoyuz to the Turkish front, and a participant in the Battle of Sarikamish, among many others. The daily life of the Civil War—during which D. Furmanov rose to prominence during the Kornilov uprising, then became close to M. Frunze, and later became a division commissar under V. Chapaev—is captured by the author in his novella "Red Landing" and diary entries from 1919–1920. The latter largely recounts his relationship with Vasily Ivanovich, revealing to the reader the story of their friendship and unexpected conflict.
