Yamamoto Shugoro, a famous Japanese writer (1903-1967), was born in Yamanashi Prefecture to a poor family. Lack of money forced him to drop out of school, but he continued to study on his own from books he took from a second-hand bookstore owned by his relative. He lived modestly and worked a lot. He died in Yokohama from acute pneumonia and was buried in a public cemetery in Kamakura. True fame came to him after his death. In 1987, an annual Literary Prize named after him was established. Yamamoto Shugoro's works have been filmed many times, the most famous in Russia is Akira Kurosawa's film Red Beard with Toshiro Mifune in the leading role, based on the writer's most famous novel of the same name. The novel Red Beard and selected stories by the writer made up this book.
