Expanding its possessions, conquering all new stars, humanity has divided into rival factions. In the twenty-sixth century, the collectivist Articulators are battling the supporters of "democratic anarchy." When victory seems close at hand, the articulators discover an approaching swarm of ancient thinking machines in space that call themselves the Inhibitors and believe their primary goal is the destruction of all biological intelligence. The articulators do not believe they can withstand the onslaught of this new enemy, and intend to escape, exposing all other human tribes to the Inhibitors. Only one of them, the old warrior Clavain, chooses to stay behind to organize a desperate resistance... The Redemption Abyss. If a new life form appears in the universe and reaches a certain threshold of sanity, it is mercilessly dealt with by the Inhibitors, the ancient purifiers of space. Now humanity is under attack. Fleeing from an armada of killing machines, thousands of refugees, led by Clavain, a veteran of many wars, established a colony on an ocean planet, which they named Ararat. But doom came here too. And when it seemed that everything was over, an unexpected guest descended from heaven as an angel of vengeance to martyr her offender and give the others a ghostly chance.
