Andrei Platonovich Platonov (1899–1951) was one of the most distinctive Russian writers of the first half of the 20th century, both in style and language.
The story "The Foundation Pit" is a harsh satire on the USSR during collectivization, combining elements of philosophical parable and surrealism. Thirty-year-old worker Voshchev is fired from his factory due to "growing weakness and thoughtfulness." Seeking to discover the truth and understand the world, he finds himself in a neighboring town, working on the construction of a "common proletarian house," which is to become the foundation of a city of a "happy future."
The collection also includes the stories "The Potudan River," "The Secret Man," and the short stories "Yushka," "The Unknown Flower," "In a Beautiful and Furious World," among others.
