The kosorovotka, along with the sarafan, is a kind of symbol of Russian traditional costume. The illustrated edition covers in detail for the first time the history of this key item of men's clothing in peasant and urban environments from the 18th to the 20th century.
The research and illustrative basis of the edition is the collection of the Russian Ethnographic Museum (St. Petersburg). The Russian collection of the museum contains about five hundred men's shirts, a significant part of which are rare antique items. The book also presents items from the collections of the State Hermitage, Astrakhan, Bogorod, Mordovian, Nizhny Tagil, Smolensk and Tambov museums. The main types of kosovorotka shirts, their decorative design, peculiarities of cut, materials from which they were made are shown. Both peasant samples and stylized items of the "Russian style" epoch are presented. The book contains a large practical section, including cut and embroidery schemes of three shirts (including on a separate sheet-insert). The materials are intended for researchers and reconstructors, as well as for anyone interested in authentic samples of traditional clothing.
