B. N. Tikhomirov's book is a series of essays devoted to addresses on Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg, in one way or another connected with the biography and/or work of F. M. Dostoevsky.
Nevsky Prospect was home to such historical figures as V. G. Belinsky, A. A. Kraevsky, N. A. Nekrasov, M. M. Dostoevsky, Baron A. E. Wrangel, A. S. Suvorin, etc., with whom Dostoevsky visited, corresponded or had other literary or worldly relations. He also spoke here at literary evenings in the Noble Assembly, took part in a séance at A. N. Aksakov's apartment, listened to Lord Redstock's sermon, prayed in the Znamenskaya Church, visited the Winter and Anichkov palaces, and so on. In Wolf's confectionery (formerly Wolf and Beranger's) Dostoevsky had a fateful acquaintance with M. V. Petrashevsky. Some of his works ("The Crocodile", "The Double", "Notes from Underground", "The Idiot", "The Teenager") take place in Nevsky, the routes of a number of his characters, and the prototypes of his heroes live there. The book relies on unpublished materials from the writer's archive, printed sources of the 19th century, and other historical documents to highlight little-known pages of the writer's biography, to provide for the first time addresses related to him, to provide data on the history of buildings on Nevsky Prospekt, and to recreate the context of Dostoevsky's epoch.
