The memoirs of Colonel Vasily Nikolaevich Birkin (1880–?) are dedicated to one of the most famous episodes of the Civil War in Russia — the First Kuban “Ice” Campaign of the Volunteer Army, which lasted from February 9 (22) to April 30 (May 13), 1918. The memoirs are part of the autobiographical “Tales of Past Years”, written by the author in exile and partially published in Germany in the 1920s–1930s and in modern Russia. Written in good artistic language, the memoirs cover the First Kuban and the beginning of the Second Kuban Campaign. Much attention in the memoirs is paid not to the ceremonial side of the events, but to the daily life of the first campaigners, the relationships between them, the figures of military leaders, among whom Birkin especially singles out Lieutenant General S. L. Markov.
