"The Red Horse" is a sequel to the novel "Khmel" (Hops) and the second part of Alexei Cherkasov's celebrated trilogy "Tales of the People of the Taiga," co-authored with his wife, Polina Moskvitina. Written in 1972, later than the other books in the trilogy, the novel is dedicated to the turbulent events of the Civil War. Siberia is gripped by the White Terror, and even the steadfast Old Believers cannot remain uninvolved in the political events: Belaya Yelan is divided into two camps, shaken by the swift march of a menacing and inexorable time. "Time is not a horse; you can't break it in, you can't calm it—it just flies and rushes, but where will it go? And what will happen tomorrow, the day after? Death or health? Will the turbulent times drag him down for good or for ill?.." The need to choose his own path also confronts the novel's protagonist, the Cossack ensign Noah Lebed, nicknamed Red Horse, whose actions are guided by an unshakable faith in the triumph of goodness and justice: "No one will overthrow my conscience. And my honor. The whole world stands on that."
