In the late 1970s, Pierre Guyotat began writing "The Stories of Samora Machel," a massive novel about the fate of an Algerian slave, seducer, and self-prostituting prophet. The work of writing required an inordinate amount of willpower and gradually began to displace reality. Pierre Guyotat stopped eating and subsisted solely on Compralgyl, an analgesic available over the counter at the time. In December 1981, Pierre Guyotat fell into a coma: he descended into the abyss of self-destruction and was resurrected. "Coma" is a book about how the spirit consumes the body.
