Western experts consider Kim Philby (1912-1988) to be the most famous of the Soviet intelligence officers. A British aristocrat and Cambridge graduate, he linked his fate with Soviet intelligence in 1934, and on its instructions he joined SIS, the British intelligence service. The career that the Soviet intelligence officer made in the ranks of this special service is astonishing: in 1944 he headed the department engaged in the fight against Soviet intelligence on British territory, and in 1949-1951 he headed the SIS-CIA liaison mission in Washington. As a result, according to one of the veterans of American intelligence, “all the extremely extensive efforts of Western intelligence services in the period from 1944 to 1951 were fruitless. It would have been better if we had done nothing at all.” Philby was even one of the candidates for the post of head of SIS. The study by intelligence historian Nikolai Dolgopolov, known to readers from the book in the ZhZL series "Abel-Fischer", not only reveals a number of little-known pages in the life of the most legendary intelligence officer after his escape from Beirut to Moscow in 1963, but also tells in detail about the entire "Cambridge Five", which included Kim Philby. Especially for this publication, the Foreign Intelligence Service provided a number of unique declassified documents that had not been published before.
