Julius Africanus (c. 170 - after 244) is one of the early Christian writers, the author of both religious and secular works. His work, as well as the entire era of the Severan imperial dynasty as a whole (193-235), is characterized by a mixture of ancient and oriental ideas, mysticism, philosophy and magic. The work "Kesty" offered to the reader, written in ancient Greek around 230, fully corresponds to these characteristics. It was an encyclopedia in 24 books, each of which was devoted to a specific topic, of which only the seventh book on military affairs has been almost completely preserved. The present edition - the first translation of the treatise into Russian - most fully presents the surviving fragments of this work, which also talks about agriculture, veterinary science, metrology, geometry, magic, medicine, etc.
