In this little booklet, Father John collected penitential troparia from the Lenten Triodion, some songs from the Great Penitential Canon of St. Andrew of Crete (translated into Russian), reflections and prayers from the works of the ascetics of piety Bishop Jeremiah (Solovyov) of Nizhny Novgorod and Bishop Porfiry (Uspensky) of Chigirin. It also includes the “Penitential Canon of a Fallen and Then Repentant Monk,” written by Archimandrite Amphilochius (Tumsky), who was at penitence in the Pereyaslavl Danilov Monastery in 1857.

The little booklet of penitential reflections and prayers was Father John’s evening reading for many years of his earthly life.
