A unique study by ethnographer William Cresson is devoted to the history of the Cossacks. Based on the works of historians, Cossack songs, tales and legends, the author examines the concepts of the emergence of this Russian-speaking sub-ethnos in the Don and Dnieper steppes, describes the way of life, culture, and features of service in the Don and border troops. A separate chapter is devoted to the Zaporizhian Sich and its freedom-loving brotherhood. The author masterfully conveys the story of the Zaporizhian Cossacks writing a letter to the Turkish sultan, which served as the subject for the famous painting by I. E. Repin, and cites the letter itself - a striking example of original Cossack creativity. The narrative is supplemented by historical portraits of Cossack leaders: the conqueror of Siberia Yermak, hetmans Bohdan Khmelnitsky and Ivan Mazepa, the rebel Yemelyan Pugachev and the heroic ataman M. I. Platov. Of particular interest are the essays dedicated to the border Cossacks: the Kuban, Terek, Grebensk, Astrakhan, Ural and Orenburg Cossacks.
