The book tells about the life and work of the great Italian utopian philosopher, Dominican monk Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639). Born into the family of a poor shoemaker, already in his youth he surprised his mentors with his tireless thirst for knowledge, phenomenal memory, and bold scientific judgments. It is not surprising that his entire subsequent life was spent in the struggle against the inertia of the then scholastic science. Campanella spent more than three and a half decades in the dungeons of the Inquisition, undergoing monstrous tortures (one of which lasted 36 hours). But neither his spirit, nor his will, nor his powerful mind were broken. It was in prison, mostly secretly, that Campanella wrote his brilliant philosophical, religious and political treatises, the most famous of which was the utopia "City of the Sun", in which the monk-philosopher brilliantly embodied the socialist ideals of early Christianity.
