A monument of world literature - the Karelian-Finnish epic poem "Kalevala" by Elias Lönnroth (1802-1884) - is published in an abridged version translated by Armas Mishin (1935-2018) and Eino Kiuru (1929-2015). The book introduces the reader to the key plots of the poem. Among them are myths about the creation of the world from a duck egg, the birth of fire and iron, the creation of the musical instrument kantele and the magic mill sampo, the abduction of the sun and the moon and their release. The themes and motifs of "Kalevala" have rightfully entered the circle of the world cultural heritage: in literature, painting, music. The edition is provided with a preface, a list of the poem's main characters, detailed content, and a dictionary of forgotten terms.
