Yuri Shevchenko, the last Stalin and first Lenin scholarship recipient at the Moscow Architectural Institute, had brilliant professional prospects ahead of him, but he was unexpectedly recruited into intelligence.

The illegal "James," a French artist and architect, reportedly worked in approximately ninety countries on every inhabited continent. The documents he obtained—mostly classified—constitute approximately three hundred volumes of archival material, and he is considered one of the most effective Soviet and Russian illegal intelligence agents. In 2001, the decision was made to cease Yuri Anatolyevich's active intelligence activities abroad, and in 2017, he was awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation. Shevchenko's name only became known to the general public in 2020—a little less than a year before his departure.

This book presents declassified fragments from SVR operational documents for the first time.
