Squadrons of combat aircraft designed to simulate an aerial battle with fighters of a likely U.S. adversary during exercises began to be formed after the Vietnam War. The new squadrons were collectively known as the Aggressor. During the Cold War, the Aggressor aircraft had identification marks and camouflage coloring typical of the Soviet Air Force. In recent years, when the West has clearly pointed to Russia as a likely adversary, "aggressorism" has blossomed with new vigor. The fighters of the "aggressors" conduct training air battles in full compliance with the rules and regulations of the countries - probable adversaries of the United States. The selection of aircraft for the squadrons is made in such a way that they roughly match the characteristics of the "enemy" fighters. "Aggressors" (it can only be an experienced volunteer pilot, qualified as an instructor) train formation pilots to conduct maneuvering air battles. ALL fighter pilots of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy air forces must go through combat with the "aggressors".
A new book by a leading historian of modern aviation for the first time gives a complete picture of the history and all types of aircraft of "Aggressor" squadrons - from inception to the present day, including squadrons of aggressor helicopters and top-secret "electronic aggressors", simulating radio-electronic warfare of the "enemy".
