The fighter of the outstanding aircraft designer Kurt Tank was created as a direct competitor to the Messerschmitt Bf 109. "The Focke-Wolf Fw 190 was the only German fighter designed and put into mass production during the war. It was named "Würger" (Würger) after a small bird of prey, the magpie, known in German as the "ripper" because it tears its prey apart. This airplane remained a mystery to our specialists until the end of 1942, when the "Fokker" (as it was nicknamed in the Red Army) entered the battle on the Soviet-German front. The famous 54th Luftwaffe fighter squadron "Green Heart" ("Grünherz") fought on "Fokkers", and the last variant of the fighter, which our pilots met in air battles in 1945, was the Fw 190 "Dora" with a liquid-cooled engine. In total, during the war years, the Third Reich aircraft industry produced more than 20 thousand Fw 190 (only the Bf 109 produced more, but the "Fokker" surpassed the "Messer" in its firepower).
