The Czech priest and master Jan Hus (between 1369 and 1373—1415) lived through a difficult period, when the seeds of the New Age were beginning to sprout vigorously in Medieval Europe, undermining and destroying the very foundations of life and thought. In philosophy and theology, the centuries-long tyranny of scholastic Aristotle was waning; the papacy, the supreme divine-human authority of Europe, was shaken by the Avignon Schism and completely discredited by the emergence of a third pope, John XXIII, a former rapist and pirate; the corrupt Church, for money, turned a blind eye to the sins of the laity, indulging in widespread decay and debauchery. And then, in Prague, the powerful voice of a Czech preacher was heard, advocating for the purification of the Church and the correction of human life. He proved to be displeasing to too many people and, after spending seven months in the dungeons of Constance, he ended his life at the stake, without betraying his ideas and beliefs.
