Roman Gul (1896-1986) – émigré writer, editor, critic, publisher, publicist, and memoirist – was born in Penza to the family of a city notary. He studied law at Moscow University, served at the front, and after the Revolution joined the Volunteer Army. He was soon captured in Kyiv and deported to Germany. In 1933, he was imprisoned in a concentration camp.
This is the first volume of his memoirs, "I Took Russia Away," which Roman Gul wrote in the United States. It offers a comprehensive panorama of the turbulent émigré life in Berlin in the 1920s. The author was a participant in the Smenovekh movement, a member of the Berlin Union of Russian Writers, and editor of the newspaper "Nakanune." He knew everyone, and everyone knew him; he was friends with Alexei Tolstoy, Andrei Bely, Marina Tsvetaeva, Konstantin Fedin, Mark Aldanov, Sasha Cherny and many other Russian poets and writers.
