"Atlantes," "At the Pillars of Hercules," "The Sky Over Canada Is Blue," "To the Mainland," "The Wife of the French Ambassador," "Rips," "Snow," and "Leather Jackets" ("Song of Polar Pilots")—these songs by Alexander Gorodnitsky, written during long ocean voyages and expeditions in the Far North, have long since become folk songs, and the poet himself is rightfully recognized as a living classic. His name ranks alongside those of Vladimir Vysotsky, Bulat Okudzhava, and Yuri Vizbor. Alexander Gorodnitsky's song "Atlantes Hold Up the Sky..." is the official anthem of the State Hermitage Museum and the unofficial anthem of St. Petersburg. Scholarly articles and dissertations have been devoted to the work of this renowned poet and bard. Alexander Gorodnitsky is an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, an Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, the first recipient of the Bulat Okudzhava State Literary Prize, and the first recipient of the Yevgeny Yevtushenko "More Than a Poet" Literary Prize. A minor planet (asteroid) named 5988 Gorodnitsky and a mountain pass in the Sayan Mountains are named after him. This book includes selected works by Alexander Gorodnitsky, the most recent of which were written in 2026.
