"Fighter" - a novel about Soviet pilots, "Stalin's falcons". They crossed the North Pole, sharpened the air paths to America. Their lives are a metaphor for overcoming in the name of a higher purpose, the trust of the people and the leader. Dmitry Bykov tried to look on the other side of ideology, to understand what kind of force ruled Soviet history. The word "exterminator" in the novel is polysemantic. In the thirties in the USSR, every representative of the "new nation" could be both an exterminator and exterminated - depending on the circumstances. Many plot twists in the novel, telling of exploits in the sky and underhanded battles in instances, illustrate this chapter of our history well.
"This novel is my final treatment of Soviet history. At least, I think so, because in it I seem to have explained to myself its phenomenon. It is a novel about pilots - "Stalin's Falcons", about polar drift and stratospheric assault, about several geniuses and one king reporter, about a woman who is doomed to return time after time to her murderer..." (Dmitry Bykov) "And then Petrov saw in front of him a rapidly approaching fighter jet. It was flying straight towards him, for some reason not firing; a huge, black, unknown to him model. He could not make out who was at the helm, he remembered the red stripes on the wings - probably the personal battle coloring of the ace, there were such fops. The closer Petrov flew to it, the clearer he understood: the size of this machine exceeded all human comprehension, more than fifteen, no, twenty meters in span, with a propeller of incredible size. Petrov realized that this propeller was about to chop him into mincemeat, and with a wild, final effort he leapt upward. The giant loomed over him and swallowed him up.
