Book One of Volume One of the "History of Russia" is devoted to the earliest history of human societies in our country. The first section examines the historical processes of the Stone Age—from the first appearance of humans on the territory of modern Russia (approximately 1.9 million years ago) and the beginning of the development of human culture to the Early Metal Age, characterized by the discovery of copper and bronze for the manufacture of tools and weapons. It was during the Eneolithic and Bronze Ages (5th–2nd millennia BC) that cultures with productive economies emerged across much of Northern Eurasia, their range gradually expanding further north and east. Russian archaeology has substantiated the existence of large cultural and production systems (metallurgical provinces), which largely determined the cultural, industrial, and social development of ancient societies. Within these provinces, mining, metallurgy, and metalworking technologies developed, and extensive trans-Eurasian metal trade routes emerged.

The book is intended for archaeologists, historians, ethnologists, anthropologists, students and postgraduates, as well as a wide range of readers.
