This paper presents a comprehensive study of two diplomatic missions in the mid-17th century: that of the Venetian Alberto Vimina to Russia and that of the stolnik Ivan Chemodanov and clerk Alexei Posnikov to Venice. These two embassies marked the beginning of a new era in the history of diplomatic relations between the Venetian Republic and the Russian Tsardom. The archival and published sources used in the study allowed us to analyze the embassies both as a political dialogue between states and as a vibrant and contradictory encounter of cultures. Based on this analysis, conclusions were drawn regarding the extent to which the perceptions and stereotypes of each side, developed in the 15th and 16th centuries, influenced their political dialogue, the methods and successes of the diplomats in achieving their goals, how they adapted to the conditions of an unfamiliar country, and the specifics of their perception of foreign cultural traditions.

The Appendix contains previously unpublished diplomatic documents on the history of the embassies from the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts (RGADA). The book is addressed to historians, university teachers and students, as well as a wide range of people interested in Russian history.
