J. A. Llorente's book "The History of the Spanish Inquisition" immediately after its first publication in Paris (1817) was translated into several languages and went through a number of editions. The reason for such interest in the work of Llorente, secretary of the Spanish Inquisition, is undoubtedly the abundance of genuine factual material that formed the basis of the book. By carefully studying archival documents, church chronicles and memoirs of contemporaries, the author was able to create a complete and truthful history of the holy tribunal from the time of its inception to the beginning of the XIX century. This most interesting historical era has always attracted the attention of both specialists and a wide range of readers. In Russian, Llorente's book was published in 1936 with a number of chapters removed. In this edition, the text has been restored in its entirety.

"A Critical History of the Spanish Inquisition" is written by a former canon and chief secretary of the Inquisition. The book contains a wealth of material extracted from the archives of the Inquisition and the monasteries, and takes the reader into the most secret corners of the Inquisition's custody. The author criticizes the Inquisition from the point of view of the freedom of the national church and not only does not show that the Inquisition was a tool in the hands of the ruling classes, but, on the contrary, tries to prove that the secular power was not involved in it.
