J. A. Llorente's "History of the Spanish Inquisition" was translated into several languages and went through several editions immediately after its first publication in Paris (1817). The interest in the work of Llorente, secretary of the Spanish Inquisition, undoubtedly stems from the abundance of authentic factual material that formed the basis of the book. By carefully studying archival documents, church chronicles, and the memoirs of contemporaries, the author managed to create a complete and truthful history of the Holy Tribunal from its inception to the early 19th century. This fascinating historical era has always attracted the attention of both specialists and the general public. Llorente's book was published in Russian in 1936 with several chapters removed. This edition has the text restored in full.

"Critical History of the Spanish Inquisition" was written by a former canon and chief secretary of the Inquisition. The book contains a wealth of material extracted from the archives of the Inquisition and monasteries, and takes the reader into the most hidden corners of the Inquisition's dungeons. The author criticizes the Inquisition from the perspective of the freedom of the national church and, far from demonstrating that the Inquisition was a tool of the ruling classes, attempts, on the contrary, to prove that the secular authorities had no involvement in it.
