The work of Blessed Theodoret of Cyrus, "The History of the Lovers of God," is a most valuable monument of ancient church literature. It can be called the "Old Syriac Patericon," for this work is dedicated to describing the lives of the holy Syrian ascetics of the 4th-5th centuries, who stood at the origins of modern Eastern monasticism. It was first translated into Russian a century and a half ago, and this translation, based on a very poor-quality and incomplete edition of the Greek text of "The History of the Lovers of God," has many shortcomings. The translation of this work, now presented to the Orthodox reader, supplied with commentary by Professor of the Moscow Theological Academy, Doctor of Church History A.I. Sidorov, is based on a critical and high-quality foreign edition by P. Kanive. This book contains the spiritual wisdom and ascetic experience of ancient saints.
