"Historical Library" Diodorus of Sicily - one of the most remarkable works of classical antiquity. The author, a learned Greek from the Sicilian town of Agiria, lived in the 1st century B.C. and was a contemporary of the final formation of the world Roman power. Obviously, this event influenced Diodorus' plan to create a detailed overview of the entire power, including the countries of the Ancient East, Greece and Rome, from the most ancient origins to his own time, i.e. approximately to the middle of the first century BC. The author gave his work the title "Historical Library" in order to emphasize the abundance and diversity of the sources underlying it. Huge in size, Diodorus' work was divided into 40 books. Of these, only 15 (I-V, XI-XX) have survived in their entirety, and from the rest have survived only fragments in the form of quotations or transcriptions from later ancient and Byzantine writers. The work of Diodorus, valuable both for its historical narrative proper and for its well-developed chronology, is like the backbone of the historical tradition that survived from antiquity. The first volume of the new Russian translation of Diodorus includes the first ten books of the "Historical Library", which first describes the countries and peoples of North Africa (primarily Egypt), the Near East, India and Scythia, together with their mythology and legendary prehistory. Then (from the GU book) the author moves on to the Greek world, recounts the myths of the Greek gods and heroes, and narrates the ancient history of the Greeks from the Trojan War to the campaign against Greece by the Persian king Xerxes (480 B.C.).
