In 2005, Vera Pavlovna Frolova's autobiographical book, "Look for Me in Russia," was published. Published in a modest print run of 500 copies, the book immediately became a bibliographic rarity: this substantial volume presented readers with the diaries that the young Vera kept while in German captivity from 1942 to 1945.
"I was 17 years old when Strelna, a suburb of Leningrad, where I was born and attended school, was occupied by Nazi troops. "And in the spring of 1942, the Nazis deported my mother and me to Germany, where we became 'Ostarbeiters,' in other words, 'Eastern slaves.'" Vera Pavlovna wrote in the preface to the first edition, introducing this restrained and laconic retelling of excruciatingly horrific biographical facts to a stunningly powerful human document—the testimony of an eyewitness and participant in one of the most monstrous tragedies of the 20th century.
"After our liberation by Soviet troops in March 1945, we returned to our homeland. My only 'trophy' from Germany was a battered straw 'duffel bag' containing a stack of diary entries..." Written partly on paper packaging from German fertilizer, these entries were carefully preserved by Vera Pavlovna throughout her life and were personally prepared for publication.
The chronicle of four years of captivity comprises the four parts of the book "Look for Me in Russia." This volume includes the first and second parts of Vera Pavlovna Frolova’s diary, covering the events of 1942 and 1943.
