In the mid-1930s, Irmina von Bedinger, a young ambitious German woman, travels to London to gain a profession and gain independence. There she meets one of the first black students of Oxford Howard Green, and the desire for an independent life brings them closer. However, the relationship between Irmina and Howard will not last long: having lost the last source of income and, as a result, the opportunity to stay in England, the girl is forced to return to her homeland. The approach of war and the loss of contact with Howard ruins Irmina’s dreams and forces her to adapt to the norms of society in order to survive under the yoke of criminal ideology.
Based on true events, the graphic novel Irmina is an insightful drama about the choice between personal freedom and social status. In it, the German artist Barbara Elin perfectly conveys the oppressive atmosphere of Nazi Germany and speaks with compassion about the fate of ordinary Germans who found themselves in the epicenter of tragic events.
