Italian novelism of the XVII century is rich, interesting and completely unknown to the reader. "Brancaleone" - its first example, appearing in Russian translation. It can be called a novel of education, only it is devoted to the education ... donkey. The protagonist, sold from his parents' stall in his youth, goes from one master to another, listening to a myriad of stories that should teach him wit and reason, while the author gives his adventures a moral and political interpretation to teach the reader. The narrative framework, the wanderings of a sensible donkey, is taken from Apuleius' novel; the inserted short stories are taken from Aesop's fables, roguish diction, and other sources; this bizarre fusion of disparate elements places Brancaleone somewhere between a novel and a genre familiar to Italian literature, the framed collection of short stories.
