"The Foreigner" is a story about emigration, written in Dovlatov's signature ironic style.

The plot unfolds in the Russian neighborhood of New York City. The protagonist, Marusya Tatarovich, a girl from a good Soviet family, had no apparent reason to leave the USSR, but at some point, it seemed to her that "it's all happened before," and she and her son landed at Kennedy Airport.

Over time, her hopes for change in her life are dashed, and a sense of despair and an unexpected desire to return home emerge. And increasingly, the question arises: "Was it worth traveling so far for this?"
