The events of Sergei Dovlatov's novella "The Foreigner", written in 1985-1986, take place in the Russian district of New York, where the author himself lived. Here is how Dovlatov describes this unique, cheerful island: "We are six brick buildings around a supermarket, populated mainly by Russians. That is, recent Soviet citizens. Or, as the newspapers write, third-wave emigrants... We have Russian stores, kindergartens, photo studios and hairdressers. There is a Russian travel agency. There are Russian lawyers, writers, doctors and real estate agents. There are Russian gangsters, madmen and prostitutes. There is even a blind Russian musician."
